‘UNTOLD EARTH: GIANT CUTTLEFISH’

PBS NATURE AND ATLAS OBSCURA

Every winter, the world's largest cuttlefish species, the Giant Australian Cuttlefish, gathers by the thousands along a single eight-kilometre stretch of coastline in Whyalla, South Australia, to mate and spawn.

Untold Earth, the documentary series from PBS Nature and Atlas Obscura, travelled to the Upper Spencer Gulf to document one of the ocean's strangest mating rituals, including the smaller males' remarkable trick of mimicking females to slip past their larger rivals undetected.

Woody was Director of Photography on the episode, shooting both above and below the water in Whyalla, South Australia. He has filmed the Whyalla giant cuttlefish aggregation across multiple productions throughout his career.
